The Impact of “The Marrow of Tradition” on Future American Literature

The first part of the essay analyzes the major concepts raised by Charles W. Chesnutt in The Marrow of Tradition and the impact of his work on future American literature. These are white Americans’ culture, racial folklores interrelations, and images of Black people and other people of color (Chesnutt, 2020). The second section of the article explores in detail the behaviors and motivations of the Black and white characters in the story. Chesnutt (2020) describes the Black community as divided, while white Americans are shown as united and hostile to others. There are internal and external ideological confrontations in both racial groups, which represent conflicts of different philosophical ideas.
